Who Oversees the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000?
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) oversees the implementation and enforcement of the FOIA in the UK. The ICO ensures public authorities comply with the Act, provides guidance, and handles complaints about non-compliance.
What Information Can Be Requested Under This Act?
The FOIA allows the public to request any recorded information held by public authorities, such as emails, reports, and meeting minutes. This applies to central and local government, schools, and public health organizations, among others.
What Information Can't Be Requested?
Personal data about others, which is protected under the Data Protection Act, cannot be requested under FOIA. Additionally, information that could harm national security, be commercially sensitive, or disrupt public safety is restricted.
What Are the Absolute Exceptions for the FOIA?
Absolute exceptions include information related to national security, court records, or parliamentary privilege. Confidential communications and data prohibited from disclosure by other laws are also absolutely exempt.
